Steps in Developing an MPA Site

Step 1 - Identification of 
             Areas of Interest (AOI)

Methods/Processes:

  • Regional System Plan

  • Suggested sites from interested parties

  • Fisheries management

  • Integrated management

Step 2: Initial Screening

  • DFO Regional Coordinator

  • Determine sites applicability to the Oceans Act and MPA Program objectives, e.g. does it fit within system plan

  • Added to Regional AOI List

Step 3: Evaluation and Recommendations

  • Determines the advancement of potential Oceans Act sites

  • Assemble a site work team

  • Conduct ecological, socio-economic, and technical assessments, assembling the required information

  • Recommendation on site

Step 4: Developing the Management Plan

  • The final management plan is prepared by the work team with the
    DFO Regional MPA Coordinator

Step 5: Designation

  • Approval by Regional Director

  • General Regulations established

Step 6: Management of MPA

  • Assemble management team:
    1) Enforcement
    2) Monitoring
    3) Research
    4) Education
