Join the Conservation Council for the Annual

MUSQUASH PADDLE 2006

in support of CCNB’s
Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area Campaign

What:

A canoe, kayak, raft or rowboat paddle down the Musquash Estuary, ending with a bar-be-que picnic at Black Beach near the mouth of Musquash Harbour.

When
Saturday, July 22, Launch at 11:00 A.M. A Rain-or-Shine Event!

Where
We will put our boats in the water just above the Highway #1 bridge crossing the Musquash River (see map) and cover a distance of about 9 km (7 miles) to Black Beach. Those who wish to haul out sooner can do so at the Five Fathom Hole Wharf, about 2/3 of the distance along. A shuttle van will provide transportation from the wharf to Black Beach and from Black Beach back to the launch site where cars will be parked. Those without sea-worthy craft will also haul out at Five Fathom Hole, since traversing the open harbour just beyond can be tricky in certain wind and current conditions. Everyone will haul out at the wharf if fog or wave conditions make harbour paddling unsafe. This decision will be made by our tour leader, David Thompson. Everyone is expected to respect his decision.

Why:
CCNB's campaign to have the Musquash Estuary designated a Marine Protected Area under the Canada Ocean Act is now entering its 8th year (these things take time!). We host the Musquash Paddle to give supporters a water-level view of the estuary, much of which is inaccessible and invisible by road. We will experience the serenity of the winding river channel through vast salt marshes and the drama of the rugged harbour which opens to the Bay of Fundy.

Cost:
There is a registration fee of $20.00 for individuals, and $40.00 for families (two adults and all children).

Details:
1) All paddlers must pre-register by July 17 (phone 529.8838 or e-mail fundybaykeeper@conservationcouncil.ca).
2) All paddlers must be equipped with life jackets.
3) No motorized vehicles will be allowed.
4) All paddlers should provide suitable clothing for changeable weather and bring sun screen, hats, water and en route snacks is desired.
